The Drunken Sailor

This familiar, robust sea chantey likely comes from early nineteenth-century England or America. Using the call-and-response structure typical of the traditional worksong, the verses all answer the question “what shall we do with a drunken sailor?” with various means or rousing or disciplining him. The sturdy piano accompaniment is challenging.
