Wayfaring Stranger is one of the most well-known American folk songs, and while historians generally believe it originated in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century, there are competing theories as to whether it began as a Southern folk hymn or an African-American spiritual. Regardless, the song has a haunting power that resonates as deeply today as it did earlier in our history.
